01 The Departure is Near

Dear friends and family,

Our departure is "soon and very soon" (5 bonus points if you can sing the rest of that song before clicking on the link). We leave on Saturday 8/11/07 at 11:30 AM. That is just over 48 hours from now as I write this.

We have been thinking about this trip for several years now, planning for several months, and panicked only a few moments (so far). Part of the anticipation is our having experienced the beauty of God’s world and rich diversity of the people He has created in our past trips to Europe. I find myself dreaming of not only the places I will see but also the people I will meet.

As you can see preparations are afoot. We are trying to pack light (a feat not easily accomplished when textbooks are involved). We are hoping to pack for our two week Scandinavian trip in our carryon bags. I have been trying to follow Rick Steves’ packing advice. I hope he knows what he is talking about. Our main luggage (4 large suitcases) are going to be mailed (via Royal Mail – so I anticipate regal handling of my possessions) from Heathrow airport to Harlaxton College where we will be living. The post office will take the suitcases to mail but only if they are in a cardboard box or if they have been wrapped in plastic (or as the British say, cellophane). So we will be taking our bags to the Excess Baggage store to have them encapsulated and then to the Post Office to mail. This will be done on Sunday morning when we arrive in London.

Are we ready? We will see. Although I try to convince myself that I am prepared for this adventure and think I know what to expect, in my saner moments I realize that my life may very well take an inverted perspective from time to time over the next few months. But even the unexpected should be expected.

“In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.” - Proverbs 16:9

I thought about posting our itinerary here but decided you will have to check in from time to time to see about the latest news of the Penny and Ray saga.

Yous in Christ,
